Master of Business in Energy systems
Programme
The modules, preparatory and follow-on exercises are designed to allow the student to explore the topics in relation to his/her own context, subject to guidance from the module managers.
The five subject modules are spread across sixteen weeks of classroom study. The energy project and the final thesis complete the curriculum. Including preparatory and follow-up exercises, each of the five modules is designed to allow the student to explore the topics covered as they relate to his or her own working environment.
Five modules and a master assignment
Module 1: Use & efficiency
After this module the participant can make a solid energy analysis for his organisation based on energy demand, use. Based on the analysis the participant will manage the energy use and make plan to improve energy efficiency in an organisation and society.
Module 2: Sources & systems
Sources and systems is about evaluating and judging all different sources of energy and how they fit the energy systems. After this module the participant can work out energy- and pollution-reduction plans in residential and industrial areas. As end result the participant builds an energy plan for a city or region taking into account the complexity of decentralized electricity production
Module 3: Markets & policies
The energy market is a rapidly changing regulated market. When the participant has successfully ended this module he is understands the complex regulatory and political environment that impacts on the sustainable energy supply chain on a global, European and national level. The participant knows the roles of different actors in the sustainable energy supply chain and how to make use of these actors.
Module 4: Business & strategy
Now the energy market is changing it is very important to make and implement an energy strategy for the organisation and society. The participant very well equipped to define the scenarios and the corresponding strategies. Based on the strategy the participant understands the implications on operational management and makes the business case at a strategic level bearing in mind all necessary influences like permits and finance.
Energy project
During the first 4 modules the participant is working on a project for a organization, which is not his own. The purpose of this project is not only to come up with a perfect solution for the organisation, but also for the participant to show his ability to cooperate in a team with three other energy professionals. The participant also shows his ability to perform desk research on a systematic and academically level.
Master Module
The master module integrates all elements under the umbrella of innovation. Key people behind challenging innovations are presenting experiences so that lessons can be learned. There will be the opportunity for the participants to suggest speakers or subjects and have discussions with leading persons from the energy industry.
Assignments and examination
During the programme, the students are set several written assignments related to their own organisation. In carrying these out, they show how what they have learned can be applied in their own working environment. They must therefore demonstrate the ability to put that knowledge into practice. The energy project concludes with a group assignment geared towards the host organisation.
On completing all four blocks, the student is required to write a final thesis and submit it to the Board of Examiners. This is followed by an oral examination at which the work is defended before the Board. A typical energy management thesis presents a thorough analysis of a energy issue at the student’s own organisation, complete with recommendations for the future. Many theses written for Delft TopTech Master Programmes have become platforms for successful change, giving the subject organisation a competitive edge.
